My Life With Hillary

This is currently live on Politico:
As we greet the return of Hillary Rodham Clinton to the political stage, it cannot be denied that she is unique in many ways. One of these is an almost unheard-of political longevity. Players in politics seldom hold onto front-runner status after 23 years in the public eye. In spite of great controversies (and one very big loss) Hillary, most definitely, still does.

Of all political figures today, she may be the most durable because of her multifaceted nature, appealing to both hawks and liberals, activists and business tycoons. Whatever you say about her, there is almost always some evidence pointing to the opposite. This also applies to the way I rendered her over the decades. My approach shifted as did her shape. So without any discernible theme, here are some 28 Hillarys that have haunted my career as well as my dreams.
My great thanks to Janet Michaud, designer, Susan Glasser editor, Lori Kelly, Katelyn Fossett, Garrett Graff. And especially to Jeff Bartholet for the inspiration for this project.

Me vs. Madonna!

Can you lend a hand here? It’s a battle of covers with my Game of Thrones Bush family Newsweek cover vs. V’s Madonna and Katy Perry! Seems hopeless, but it may be possible to win this for old (new) Newsweek and their shadowy Korean benefactors (who have been, so far, hands-off). Please take a look and vote (unless Katy and Madonna are too irresistible, in which case . . . although George HW Bush is quite a pin-up himself here.)

Good Bye, Little Tony

Love this by Jonathan Chait in NY Mag. “Everything Rubio touches turns to shit.” READ

Rubio Bust

The Christie Press Conference today . .

Christie Pit Bull . . . was very instructive. As a pol he is unique. He toggles. One moment he’s the ferocious man-eating shark. The next he is the innocent, earnest young fellow, eager to make good. This, in politics, is what we call talent. It can cover a multitude of sins. Reagan had it and people still don’t know the tremendous damage he caused. Christie has it in a blue-collar mien and voice. As I watched this performance all I kept thinking was, this is one dangerous sonofabitch.

If Looks Could Kill

For those who saw my Facebook post about the eyes I drew the other day, here’s the rest of him. Yep, it’s the Uncaped Cruzader himself. For a new cover for The Nation. For a wonderful piece by RICK PERLSTEIN on the Tea Party and how far back the Paranoid Style in American Politics goes. Spoiler alert: it goes WAAAAY Back. Left to right: Jesse Helms, Ronald Reagan, Grover Norquist, Newt Gingrich, Barry Goldwater, Tailgunner Joe McCarthy.

Thanks to designer Robert Best who is making this magazine sing as never before, Roane Carey, Katrina vanden Heuvel, editors.

And this just in: a FOX meltdown over the piece.

The always delightful Greta Van Susteren going off on it.  Oh, Foxnewsbabe I love you don’t do this to me!  Upset apparently, that we see Ted next to Joe. They’re just enjoying a little Lipton moment!  C’mon.

The fun here is that while she and friends below can’t stand the connection with McCarthy, they, simultaneously say that we need another on like him!!!  So what’s wrong with Ted?  He already looks just like him.  An embarrassment of riches! Below is assistant Lisa tweeting away on this. Both of us having a high old time at the studio today. Thanks to Rick Perlstein.Screen Shot 2013-11-08 at 4.58.26 PM
