Art, politics, angels, demons . . . and righteous dogs.

And Get the Lead out, Rupie!!!!!!!

Sarah I love you so much.

This weekend at some Ronald Reagan Dinner in Iowa (they just can’t get over him), my heart-throb Sarah let it be known in no uncertain terms that she values the freedom of the press.  In her talk she defended it as a sacred right and then condemned professional journalists, whose qualifications she questioned as a rule, for using “anonymous sources”.  Perhaps she had just discovered this used in an article.  Anyway, soon after “honoring” the press she started shouting orders to the political elite as to what to do to win in November.  She included “Krautheimer, Hannity, Rush” etc. in the group orders. So there’s your press, there’s your freedom; follow your orders and you will all be free.  And Rupert!!! LOOK ALIVE!!!!!!  Praise God.

This from the Huffington Post by Amanda Terkel:

In a speech at the Iowa Republican Party’s Reagan Dinner fundraiser on Friday, former Alaska governor Sarah Palin called on the GOP to come together and support the party’s nominees in November.

Hinting at the fractious primary battles in states like Delaware and Alaska, Palin said, “If the goal is to take away the gavel from Pelosi and Harry Reid and to stop the Obama agenda and make government respect the will of the people, then it is time to unite.”

Palin noted that she’s technically not part of the Republican Party “hierarchy” and therefore doesn’t get to decide how to allocate party resources, but she nevertheless opined on what should be done in the next 46 days. She said that not only should lawmakers like Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) be out campaigning, so should President Bush and various conservative media personalities:

PALIN: But anyway, if I were in that loop though — if I were in the hierarchy of leadership in the GOP — to rally the troops, you know what I’d say? I’d say, “Okay, folks. We’ve got 46 days to go.” I’d say, “DeMint, you’re awesome, we need you down south. Mitt, go west. G.W., we need you to raise funds! Kristol, Krauthammer, you’ve got to go east. Alveda, Rush, go deep — go anywhere, everywhere, people are listening. Hannity, Levin, Beck, Michelle, Laura, Tammy — all y’all! We need everybody working together! Prager, (inaudible).” I’m going to get in trouble for missing some names, so I’m going to stop. And Karl, here! You can come to Iowa! And Karl Rove and the other leaders who will see the light and realize that these are the normal, hardworking, patriotic Americans who are saying no, enough is enough. We want to turn this around and we want to get back to those time-tested truths that are right for America.

Her mention of former Bush adviser Karl Rove was most likely a reference to the fact that he went on Fox News and questioned Christine O’Donnell’s “serious character problems” on the night she beat Rep. Mike Castle (R-Del.) for the GOP Senate nod in Delaware. “This is not a race we’re going to be able to win,” he predicted. (A day later, after considerable blowback, he endorsed her.)

Palin’s call for Fox News personalities Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck is interesting, since on Wednesday, she went on Bill O’Reilly’s Fox show and counseled O’Donnell to use the network to campaign. “She’s going to have to dismiss that, go with her gut, get out there, speak to the American people,” said Palin, who is a Fox News contributor. “Speak through Fox News and let the Independents who are tuning in to you, let them know what it is that she stands for, the principles behind her positions.”

Hannity has also endorsed several GOP candidates and found himself in hot water in April when he was headlining at an event benefiting a Tea Party organization.

At the event, Palin also went after one of her favorite targets — the “lamestream media.” She said that by “claiming the right to print and say anything,” the media was disrespecting U.S. troops, who are “willing to fight and die for our constitutional rights, including that right to free press.”

Rosenblatt

In our time and place the humility of atonement and the calling to account has a deep imperative. Just open a newspaper or any news website. How fine a mass atonement and a dawning self-awareness would be.

This all brings to mind Cantor Yosele Rosenblatt.  A recent Times piece about an intrepid audio amateur in Crown Heights who is meticulously restoring Rosenblatt’s old records said this about the cantor:

“Mr. Rosenblatt was born in Russia in 1882 and toured Eastern Europe as a child prodigy. In 1912 he immigrated to the United States and became the cantor at Ohab Zedek, an Orthodox synagogue then on 116th Street in Harlem. Blessed with a penetrating bell-like tenor with a range of two and a half octaves, and a gift for coloratura and falsetto, Mr. Rosenblatt had the ability to squeeze the pathos or elation out of every prayer.”

He was a celeb in his time and became most famous, perhaps, for singing in the first big sound film, “The Jazz Singer”.  Here, playing himself, he reminds Jolson of his father and the huge tank-car of guilt he should be feeling (note: Jolson can’t quite get Bill Demerest into the concert. I’m sure Preston Sturges could do it, but that’s another movie). The Cantor would not perform Kol Nidre in the movie because he felt that it was a prayer and not appropriate for popular performance. In any case you can see and hear this man, called the Jewish Caruso.

I have included Max Bruch’s Kol Nidre below, performed by the incomparable Jacqueline Du Pré.  Peace.

Dinesh With Schmucks

In the sequel to to Dinner With Schmucks, the mouse-collecting schmuck is played by Republican Intellectual Expert on Persons of Color Dinesh d’Souza. His job for the GOP is to peddle racism for use by others, hoping he gets a pass. Here, in a book and article. he claims that Obama is a tool of his dead father’s Kenyan  Anti-Colonial world view. Then Gingrich recites this in the media.  He, in the film would have to star as Dinesh’s mouse, all dressed up in sheets.  Apparently neither is claiming Obama is the anti Christ.  This week.

Here’s KO’s take:

The Volcano is Kar-upting

The corrupt ambitions of Hamid Karzai grow by leaps and bounds.  Today’s Times reported his specific intervention in releasing a suspect in custody.

Tensions between Mr. Karzai and the Obama administration boiled over this summer after two anti-corruption task forces wiretapped conversations of a Karzai aide soliciting a bribe and threw him in jail. Mr. Karzai later intervened to have the official, Mohammed Zia Salehi, released.

Is it time yet to question our goals in Afghanistan?

TIMES STORY

It’s in the Bag

My conversion to the Tea Party is now complete with the primary win tonight of Tea Hearth-Throb Christine O’Donnell.  The biggest news about her and her pals is that while Hard Righties like her used to hide behind posturing euphemisms of various kinds, now the vogue is to let everything hang out. Not only are they backward, stupid, venal and racist . . . they are proud of it! And how they love that tea,  even if the Tea Bag that goes down is their own party.  This Senate seat will go Democrat now in Delaware because of Chrissy, the angel whose light will guide Delaware and the world.

Here’s her former campaign manager:
